Runners-Up Spot For Youth

Shrivenham Youth pipped on final day.

Shrivenham Youth have finished as Wiltshire Senior Floodlit League runners-up following tonight’s [03.06.21] final game of the campaign, which saw FC Chippenham Youth defeat bottom placed Pewsey Vale U18s 6-1 to secure the title by 1 point.

Relying on other results going their way, Paul Whitewood’s side were given a glimmer of hope on Tuesday evening when Chippenham travelled to Royal Wootton Bassett Town, however despite taking a 3-1 lead, Chippenham were awarded a soft penalty to draw level, before scoring a screamer minutes later just short of the final whistle – all but ending Shrivvy hopes and with an easy win against the leagues bottom side, Chippenham secured a seventh straight victory – to take the top spot by a single point.

Despite the disappointment of being pipped on the final date, Shrivenham Youth can take great pride in the effort shown during the 2020-21 season and League Runner-Up is a massive achievement.

With the league concluding, there will be a brief time to rest before the AGM gets underway in just three weeks’ time, and with Calne Town and Devizes Town both re-entering sides for 2021-22 there is also the possibility that a core of the side may get the opportunity to remain together as the league and member clubs mull over the possibility of creating an U20s league in addition to the U18s age group so as more time can be given to help develop the players following the last two years of Covid hit football and give players more time to bridge the gap between the Youth and Senior game.

We’ll have updates as soon as any decisions have been made, but in the meantime, we wish FC Chippenham Youth congratulations for their mammoth effort in what has been another hugely exciting season of Wiltshire Senior Floodlit Football.
