Shrivenham 3 Milton United 2

Second-half fightback sees Shrivvy make the next round of the FA Vase.

A lacklustre first half performance saw Shrivenham on the edge of an early exit from this seasons FA Vase competition but a much improved second period saw a come-back of epic proportions!

Shrivenham avoided a potential banana skin – just – as they hosted Uhlsport Hellenic League 1 East opposition at Barrington Park on Friday evening [30.08.19].

The visitors started far more energetically then their hosts and had the run of play and with 15-minutes gone, some terrible defending saw Kieran Strange bundle the ball home from a long free kick which was sent in to a crowded box.

Five minutes later, Jordan Morris saw his powerful effort fly wide of the visitor’s goal before Antonio Gerrish also sent a header the wrong side of the upright with 25-minutes gone.

The misses were to prove costly when some more poor defending allowed Paul Alder to head home number two for the visitors direct from a corner on 32-minutes – leaving Shrivvy with a massive uphill battle.

The home side managed to make the interval without conceding further and whatever was said during the team-talk certainly did the trick, with Shrivenham going on the offensive after the break.

A perfect cross from Luke Cordery on 65-minutes found top goal scorer Jack Allan in the box and although Craig Griffiths managed to dive to his left and get a hand to the ball, his efforts could only push the ball away as far as Antonio Gerrish who was following up and unmarked, he delivered a killer header in to the back of the net.

Five minutes later, captain Sam Ockwell had a decent free-kick pushed away to retain the score at 1-2 and after Jamie Prictor replaced Tom Ballard on 75-minutes the home side continue the pressure, but didn’t appear to be getting close to levelling the scores despite all their efforts.

Scott Chilcott replaced Gerrish with ten minutes remaining and just as time was running out, Dave Bampton won a tackle in the edge of the center circle, before taking one touch to put the ball on his favoured right foot and from 30-yards out, struck a sweet effort which sailed cleanly through the night sky just above head height and dipped beautifully over the keeper and in to the back of the net to level the game in the 89-minute.

The game continued in to injury time and with seconds remaining it looked as if extra time would be needed until Cordery sent another perfect long ball in to the area and met with the head of Allan, and he directed an unorthodox header to space in the middle of the penalty area and Morris read the situation perfectly and running on to the ball, with the goal to his right, dispatched a brilliant left footed shot through the defence that scorched in to the back of the net to win the tie and seal a brilliant second half effort from the whole team.
