FINAL | Wantage Town 3 Shrivenham 1

Preseason wrapped up with defeat.

Shrivenham ended their new season preparations with a 2-0 defeat on the Alfredian Park training pitch on Saturday afternoon, and with both sides having efforts which hit their opponents’ crossbars within the first ten minutes, it was looking like we could be in for a goal or two during the ninety-minutes.

Unfortunately for the visitors, who began to show their superiority and they eventually found the breakthrough on 29-minutes after Jack Dunmall was on hand to place home a rebound after Mike Alexander had parried an original effort.

Things got more desperate on 34-minutes after a trialist fouled in the area on 32-minutes and Jack Buchanan made no mistake from the spot and Shrivvy managed to limp home to the break to get some much needed words of advice.

The second half saw a better looking Shrivvy effort on the pitch and captain Sam Ockwell struck the post on the hour, but after they weathered an early storm, an own goal on 76-minutes put the hosts firmly in control of the game with a 3-0 score.

Pleasingly, Shrivvy didn’t give up on the game and Lewis Petrie [pitcured] managed to reduce the deficit with five minutes remaining after he broke away following a corner and finished calmly slotting the ball in to the corner of the net to make it 3-1 at the final whistle.

The side have two more training sessions coming up, before they hit the road to Rivermoor next Saturday [August 3, 2019] for the big Uhlsport Hellenic Premier League season opener, against Reading City.
