PREVIEW | Wantage Town vs Shrivenham

We round off a five game road trip at Alfredian Park on Saturday afternoon [16.03.19] when we visit promotion chasing Wantage Town for a 3pm kick off.

We arrive in Wantage with on the back of a twelve game straight winning run – thirteen league games undefeated when you include the 3-3 draw against Lydney Town back on November 17 [2018, with the toughest encounter yet.

That run has raised Shrivvy to a creditable sixth place in the standings with 51 points from 30 games - while our hosts have been there or thereabouts for most of the season and are currently in second place with 61 points from 29 games.  To their credit, our hosts also have three games in hand over current leaders Brimscombe & Thrupp and are just three points behind.

As you’d expect, being promotion chasers, they have firepower in abundance with top scorer Stephen Robertson having recorded an impressive 34 games in just 43 games, while Jack Dunmall has 21 from his 43 outings.

Matthew Cheetham, Daniel Comer and Chris Jackson are all leading the attendance table, with 46 games to date, while Jackson has captained the side in all but one of those games.

Ryan Markham is the player with the discipline problems this season, having picked up three red cards and three yellow ones from 26 games played.

Wantage enter the match on the back of a 1-0 away defeat at the hands of Ascot United last weekend having had a midweek cup clash with Brackley Town Saints postponed but looking back further, they’d managed six wins and one draw.

In total, the side have played a grand total of 47 fixtures up to kick off against Shrivvy, scoring 116 goals (2.46 per game), while conceding just 59 (1.25 per game).

David Pilling has been nominated as the match referee, while he’ll be assisted by David Burns and David Fiddy.  Sean Rudd is the fourth official.

The two sides last met at Barrington Park on Saturday December 8 [2018] which resulted in a 2-1 win for Shrivenham.

Goals from Tom Ballard and Antonio Gerrish were enough to take the three points, while  Ryan Markham hit the consolation for the Alfredians.
