Vandals Destroy Fence

Mindless act takes shine off fantastic season.

Shrivenham Football Club have been brought back down to earth with a bump following the Easter Bank Holiday, after discovering a section of perimeter fencing at Barrington Park has been badly damaged by vandals.

Returning to the village after a weekend away visiting friends, Chairman Matt Hirst found the deliberate act after he arrived at the club this morning to do some maintenance ahead of going to work.

“Sadly, I can only describe it as mindless vandalism,” he said.

“Like all amateur football clubs, we’re run by volunteers and we don’t have a bottomless pit of money, so it’s taken the shine off what has been an absolutely brilliant season for the club.”

Having ended the season on Bank Holiday Monday in their highest ever league placing [5th in the Uhlsport Hellenic Premier League], everyone connected to the club were heading in to the off-season with a great deal of pride, however the shine of success has now been tainted as the club will have to find additional funding to make good the damage.

“The volunteers give up a massive amount of their own time to help run the club and the facilities.  The fencing that was destroyed had a lot of time spent on it last summer with new panels being installed and painted and the sponsorship boards being erected and we truly believed that we had the support of everyone in the village, so I’m bitterly disappointed by what I found.

“We have taken great strides to increase the junior football age groups who represent the village, we run social events such as our annual Fireworks Night for families and introduced a Beer Festival this year for the adults and we even do an Easter Egg Hunt for the local children, so it does come as a bit of a kick in the teeth when something like this happens.

“We will of course have to make repairs to the damage so if the person or persons who did this had the decency to own up – or even help with giving up their time to help fix the damage, it would be a start, it’s just so disappointing.”
